“Leaving the Living room”, a VR art installation

What is the project?

“Leaving the Living room” is the result of a research project on curatorship and exhibition spaces extended to the presence of digital technology developed by the research group in Art, Science and Technology, LAB|Front. Through the 3D modelling of Guignard School art gallery (UEMG), it was possible to simulate how artistic works selected from the “Living Room” extension project, which aims to discuss access to art and culture in UEMG, would be inserted in its gallery. The aim of the project was to provide a greater dialogue and exchange of experiences among students, teachers, university staff and people interested in debates on the artistic circuit, besides experimentation, curatorial practices of exhibitions and creation of room for this kind of discussion in the university.

My challenges and responsibilities

As a developer I programmed the user’s mobility and interactivity inside the installation’s virtual environment. The purpose of the installation was to allow the user to make a virtual visit to the environment of the art gallery. The input and output data relationship, made of the user’s head movements, allowed the locomotion inside the virtual gallery. The interface operation happens when the user moves his head slightly downwards or upwards, allowing him/her to move forward or to stand still in the virtual environment. When turning the head to the left or right, the head (camera) rotates in the gallery space.
